The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Origins

It is common for a group with a name like Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a pretty straightforward rock outfit. The group began as a quartet and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest hit came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on the place with the directive "give us a hit record or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on them to meet the deadline. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experience, as the band members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.
The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into your mind. After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career. The band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than on previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released shortly after, and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was released as a double-album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
